The English and Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
